In a bizarre and tragic coincidence, two Marines were attacked in northwest DC in separate incidents on the night of February 12th. The first incident, which happened at a McDonalds, was highly publicized in the media due to the distribution of the security video showing the attack. The 2nd incident happened late at night on 37th Street in Glover Park just off the restaurant row. Security video shows the victim just before the attack, but there is no known video of the attack. Apparently, 35-year-old Michael Schroeder, a Marine who fought in Iraq, was attacked from behind and hit in the back of the head, knocking him unconscious. He was found by passers-by in the street between two cars and rushed to the hospital with a fractured skull. Such incidents are very rare for Glover Park and for western NW DC in general, but two similar incidents in one night is bizarre.
March 15th footnote: The DC Metro Police Department has classified this case as "accident" rather than "assault" and it is not being investigated.
