Glover Park Crime at Record Low!

Updated: 38 minutes ago

Crime reports for 2025 in Glover Park dropped 32% compared to 2024, following a 15% drop from 2023 to 2024. Reports to the DC Metropolitan Police Department totaled 106, less than 9 per month. Most notably, car break-ins dropped 64% to only 17 incidents. Smash and grabs have plagued the neighborhood in recent years, rising to a high of 66 thefts in 2022 and have been a thorn in the side of the police attempting to stem the tide. Glover Park has not seen such a low crime level in at least 15 years based on the readily available data from MPD. See charts at bottom.

Crime stats here cover all of Advisory Neighborhood Commission 3B, which includes parts of Cathedral Heights up to the commercial area on New Mexico Avenue south of American University. Most categories of crime dropped, though assault with a weapon (guns, knives and metal pipe) did tick up by one, due to a strange scuffle at the Guy Mason Rec Center (see notable 2025 crime incidents below). In addition, the idiot serial robber from last year - with the gun and the hammer - remains in federal prison in southern Virginia. Car theft dropped 69% to only 5, though one neighbor was carjacked and slightly injured. The scumbag was caught and prosecuted, see below. No reports of sexual assault occurred in all of 2025 and once again we had no murders, though a couple of attacks came close.

General theft remains persistent – this includes shoplifting, looting, purse/wallet snatching, bike thefts, theft of belongings from around houses and apartments (such as delivered packages) and skipping out on tabs such as rideshare fares or restaurants. Crime against businesses on Wisconsin Ave, 37th St and New Mexico Ave continues to be a problem but as you can see from the pie chart below, 46% of crime was in the neighborhood rather than the commercial strips. Though, our neighborhood businesses like CVS, Safeway and Trader Joe’s do get hit regularly, and it does not always translate to a police report and a crime statistic.

Glover Park has outpaced a similar trend across the city. Total crimes dropped 17% in DC with a notable 32% drop in homicides. Every category of crime other than the 4 arsons, dropped by double digits. The neighborhood-to-city comparison makes one wonder whether the police are doing something more effectively here, considering the dramatic drop in auto-related crimes in Glover Park.

Here is a bit of 2025 crime trivia – which neighborhood in all of DC has the highest concentration of crime? Going by equally-sized police sector rectangles of about 20 blocks by 10 blocks, it is not where many would guess. The highest concentration of crime is in the Ledroit Park sector in Northwest DC, which includes the eastern end of the U Street neighborhood. This area is just south of Howard University and the McMillan Reservoir.

Glover Park Most Wanted

These were a few notable crimes and foolish criminals in the neighborhood in 2025 that got covered by the media:

Bad Place for a Street Fight

On March 30th in the evening, three men battled in the parking lot behind Guy Mason (adjacent to the fence of the Vice President’s home). It appeared to be two against one, as one of the pair assaulted the third man with a metal pipe, and the 3rd man responded by stabbing one of the pair with a knife. Secret Service responded quickly (duh, they sit there all day and watch the cameras 24/7) and ended the attacks with MPD showing up shortly after. Michael Glenn (35) and Christopher Anderson (25) both were arrested for felony assault with a dangerous weapon. Samuel Willis (20) was arrested for simple assault (a misdemeanor). Seems the case never made it to court as there was no arraignment for any of the 3, so presumably they were released without charges.

One Really Bad Dude

On June 13th, MPD responded to a shooting on the 2300 block of 37th Street where they found a man on the ground suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. Responders checked video footage showing the suspect and his getaway car, and the Secret Service (once again) quickly tracked down and arrested 39-year-old Lorenzo Belton. While Belton had been facing multiple gun and drug charges in federal court, the new charges do not appear in Superior Court records. Maybe they already had enough on the prior federal charges, who knows. Tragically, his supervised release on prior convictions was revoked only a week earlier in federal court, yet he did not return to prison, instead he shot another person. In 2018 he was charged with unlawful possession of a firearm and possession of drugs with intent to distribute. All charges were dismissed. In 2015 Belton was found guilty of assault with a firearm and sentenced to 54 months in prison. Clearly he got out early. 2012 - assault with a firearm, sentenced to 14 months in prison.2008 - assault with a firearm charge, found not guilty.

Get Out of Jail Free

On the morning of February 3rd, Vincent Atchison, 58 years old and a resident of Capitol Heights MD, approached a women getting in her car on the 3800 block of Davis Place, assaulted her and grabbed her car keys, then fled in her vehicle. The women was checked out by a medics and was not seriously hurt. Unfortunately for Vincent, that block is surveilled by cameras installed for the Russian Embassy by the State Department, and MPD has access. Two months later he was apprehended and charged with unarmed carjacking. He was arraigned and released without bond with a stay-away order. He pleaded guilty to felony robbery and unauthorized use of a vehicle. He received a 24 month suspended sentence with 3 year supervision – i.e. he served no jail time for a violent carjacking.

Overreaction?

In the late afternoon on September 28th, a food delivery man was stabbed several times at an apartment building near the Russian Embassy on Wisconsin Avenue. The attacker apparently disputed the charges (umm, there is a process for that – just go on your app and submit a complaint ticket. Attempted murder is not necessary). The victim survived serious injuries. 37-year-old Travis T. Cole was arrested soon after. Let me guess, he was released with some supervision and no jail time and told to use his app instead of a knife - looking it up… Travis was released with a body-worn camera and a stay-away order. He is awaiting a grand jury trial which has been delayed due to his request for new counsel and a necessary change of judge due to caseload. Travis has multiple prior arrests for domestic assault (suspended sentence, no jail), assault with a deadly weapon (dismissed), multiple counts of simple assault, assault on a police officer, destruction of property (all charges dismissed), escape from jail (6 months), another assault with deadly weapon (28 months suspended, no jail). What did the judges think was going to happen next?
