Did you decide it's not worth the ten mile backup at the Chesapeake Bay Bridge, or getting on a plane to a crowded vacation spot? Are you staying in Glover Park for Independence Day? Here is a schedule with all the fun, except for getting hit by an ocean surf full of jellyfish.
Jelleff and Volta pools in Georgetown are open 10-6 Saturday and Sunday July 3rd and July 4th, and they haven't even gotten crowded yet. They are free for residents with ID!
After you've soaked up enough sun, get a ticket for the Fourth (third) of July Jam Session at Social Beast (formerly Ghostline) at 2340 Wisconsin Ave on their outdoor patio in the rear. Jazz musician Thad Wilson is hosting a jam session on Saturday July 3rd from 9:00-11:30. Reserve a table, reserve a seat at the bar, but you must reserve!
Sleep it off and then head over to the Crab Fest on Sunday July 4th at the outdoor deck at the Glover Park Grill at the Glover Park Hotel. Enjoy fresh Maryland crabs, coleslaw, corn, potato salad & more! Refreshing cocktails & buckets of beer will also be available, plus live music throughout the day. The Eastern Shore is running low on crabs this year, but not Glover Park! You have four time slots to choose from: 12-2, 2:30-4:30, 5-7, or 7:30-9:30. Also best to reserve ahead of time here.
Don't give up yet - the fireworks are about to start and you have no need to go downtown and risk getting trampled or body searched. Holy Rood Cemetery in Glover Park at 2126 Wisconsin across from Trader Joe's hosts a large but manageable crowd of neighbors every year just before sunset due to its high elevation overlooking downtown for the National Mall fireworks extravaganza. Hint: don't set up behind the giant tree. There is a reason no one else is standing there. Do respect the grave sites though.
