Demolition has begun at the Calvert Center at 2332 Wisconsin Avenue to make way for Sherwin Williams, a paint store opening soon in Glover Park. The Calvert Center at 2330-2336 Wisconsin houses Domino’s Pizza, Chipotle, the U.S. Post Office, and formerly Laliguras – a Nepali/Indian restaurant. Laliguras closed in November, 2022 after three years of trying to make a go of their second location, but tough times, including a fire, Covid lockdowns and a lengthy permitting process won out (see prior article).
Sherwin Williams has a busy paint store in Georgetown at 1805 Wisconsin Avenue near the Jelleff Recreation Center at S Street but plans are underway to replace that building, plus the former Next Day Blinds building next door and the adjacent parking lot with a 43,000 square foot four-story apartment building with ground level retail. The property is owned by Fortis Companies, which owns 4,000 multi-family units in the Washington DC area. They are in the soil testing phase and expect demolition to begin in a few months.
This is the second restaurant property to be replaced by retail in Glover Park recently – a sign of the difficulties faced by the restaurant industry post-Covid in a period of food price inflation and labor shortages. Sweetgreen at 2200 Wisconsin Avenue closed in October of 2022 and was replaced by Azam Rugs. Upside – convenient access to paint for the Glover Park neighborhood. Downside – expect double-parked contractor trucks on Wisconsin Avenue and a bit of a jam-up in the rear parking lot most likely.
